                        Explanation of Benefits (EOB) application

OPPORTUNITY - When services are provided to a patient, 3^rd party payors typically pay health service providers for services on several patients with one check and include an itemized report, the EOB, giving patient names and service coverage.  The health service provider then must submit a secondary claim for the unpaid balance due.  The challenge is to efficiently retrieve EOB documents for one patient’s service within a batched payment and remove the other patients’ information included in the EOB (per HIPAA).

SOLUTION –EOB documents are scanned and processed via optical character recognition (OCR) for automatic indexing of the posting date and batch ID number, along with names, amount and claim number.  EOBs can now be painlessly found and attached as support to a secondary claim as they are searchable by patient name or claim number.  Finally, other patient information can be digitally “whited-out” from the EOB, in compliance with HIPAA.
